CDMP Eligibility
CDMP Prerequisites: Experience, Education & Eligibility
DAMA currently states that there are no formal prerequisites to sit the CDMP exams. Experience expectations differ by certification level, and Master-level experience is specifically assessed.
- Associate is the foundational certification level.
- Practitioner reflects deeper applied knowledge and requires additional specialist exams.
- Master includes an experience assessment in addition to exam requirements.
What you should know
DAMA currently states that there are no prerequisites for any CDMP exam. You can sit the Data Management Fundamentals exam without a required degree, training course, or prior certification.
That does not mean every certification level has identical experience expectations. Associate is the entry point; Practitioner is positioned for professionals with applied experience; Master includes substantial experience and leadership expectations. Always separate “eligible to sit an exam” from “qualified for a certification level.”
Training is also optional. DAMA explicitly says candidates may self-study, although the breadth of the DMBOK means inexperienced candidates should expect to invest more time in foundational coverage.
| Question | Current answer | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Degree required? | No formal exam prerequisite | Career background can vary |
| Training required? | No | Self-study is allowed |
| Experience needed to sit Fundamentals? | No formal prerequisite | Beginners may attempt Associate |
| Experience relevant at higher levels? | Yes | Certification-level requirements still matter |
Exam eligibility vs certification progression
A new analyst can study for and sit Fundamentals without first completing a course. If the same person later wants Practitioner or Master status, the additional exams and current experience requirements become relevant.
